What's on the ASE Entry-Level Test? All 10 Areas Explained
Oct 16, 2026The ASE Entry-Level tests are designed for students and people who are new to automotive service. Instead of one big exam, they're a series of shorter tests, one per subject area. Your school or program decides which ones you take and when. Official details are published by the ASE Education Foundation (aseeducationfoundation.org); always check there for current format and registration.
The 10 automobile areas
- Brakes
- Suspension & Steering
- Electrical/Electronic Systems
- Maintenance & Light Repair
- Engine Repair
- Engine Performance
- Heating & A/C
- Automatic Transmission
- Manual Drive Train & Axles
- Service Technology
How each test is organized
Every area follows a published task list. Brakes, for example, is split into diagnosis, hydraulics, drum brakes, disc brakes, power assist, and ABS/electronic brakes. Questions are multiple choice and focus on what a new technician should know: identifying parts, basic diagnosis, safe procedures, and choosing the most likely cause.
What kinds of questions to expect
- "Most likely cause": a symptom is described and you pick the best explanation.
- Procedure order: what comes first (hint: verifying the concern and checking service information usually does).
- Technician A / Technician B: two statements; decide who is right.
- Terms and components: knowing what a part does.
Try one
A vehicle pulls to the right only when braking. The MOST likely cause is: A) Low tire pressure on the left B) Overfilled master cylinder C) Left front caliper not applying D) Worn rear shoes
Answer: C. A car pulls toward the side that's braking harder. If the left front isn't applying, the right side wins.
Where to start
Most students start with Maintenance & Light Repair and Brakes, because they build the habits the other areas assume. Study one or two areas at a time, take a practice test early to find gaps, then take a second one a few days before test day.
