How to Study for the ASE Entry-Level Tests (Area by Area)
Oct 15, 2026The ASE Entry-Level tests are written for students and people new to the trade. They are offered through participating schools and programs (see aseeducationfoundation.org). Here's a plan that works whether you study one area or all ten.
1. Pick one or two areas at a time
Most students do better focusing on 1–2 areas, like Brakes and Maintenance & Light Repair, than skimming all ten. Ask your instructor which tests your program gives first.
2. Learn the task list, not just facts
Each area is organized by published task areas (for Brakes: diagnosis, hydraulics, drum, disc, power assist, and ABS/electronic). Study in that order.
3. Practice with explanations
Answer a question, then read why. Example:
A fuse blows as soon as a circuit is switched on. The most likely cause is: A) High resistance B) An open circuit C) A weak battery D) A short to ground
Answer: D. A short to ground causes very high current that blows the fuse.
4. Learn the English terms, even if you study in Spanish
Tests use technical English. Studying terms side by side (caliper / caliper, rotor / disco) removes surprises.
5. Do a final timed practice run
Two practice tests per area: take one early to find gaps, the second a few days before your test.

DosTech Prep: $19 per area (6 months) or all 10 areas for $29/month with a 3-day free trial.
