How to Prep for the ASE A5 Brakes Test

Oct 16, 2026

A5 Brakes is one of the most common first A-series tests, because brake work is daily work in most shops. That doesn't make it automatic. The test checks whether you can diagnose, not just replace parts. Here's a simple plan that works whether you study in English or Spanish. For official test details and registration, always check ase.com.

What A5 covers

  • Hydraulic system: master cylinder, lines and hoses, valves, bleeding, fluid.
  • Drum brakes: shoes, wheel cylinders, adjusters, drum measurement.
  • Disc brakes: calipers, pads, rotor runout and thickness variation.
  • Power assist and parking brake: vacuum and hydraulic boosters, parking brake operation.
  • Electronic brake controls: ABS, traction and stability control, wheel speed sensors, scan data.
  • Related systems: wheel bearings and other items that affect braking.

A 3-week study plan

  1. Week 1: hydraulics and power assist. Most diagnosis questions come back to pressure, leaks and pedal feel.
  2. Week 2: drum and disc service. Know your measurements: rotor runout, minimum thickness, drum diameter.
  3. Week 3: ABS and electronic controls. Practice reading symptoms and choosing the right test, then take a full timed practice test.

Question styles to expect

  • "MOST likely cause" questions about a pull, a pulsation or a low pedal.
  • Technician A / Technician B questions where both, one or neither can be right.
  • "EXCEPT" questions, where you pick the one answer that doesn't fit.

Try one

A brake pedal pulsates during stops. The MOST likely cause is: A) Air in the hydraulic system B) Excessive rotor thickness variation C) A weak vacuum booster D) Glazed pads

Answer: B. Thickness variation (often called a "warped rotor") makes the caliper piston move in and out, which you feel as pulsation. Air gives a spongy pedal; a weak booster gives a hard pedal.

Study in the language you're strongest in

Some techs think in English, some in Spanish, and many switch between them. Learning each term both ways (caliper / pinza, rotor / disco, wheel speed sensor / sensor de velocidad de rueda) means nothing on test day catches you off guard.

Frequently asked questions

What does the ASE A5 Brakes test cover?

Hydraulic systems, drum brakes, disc brakes, power assist and parking brakes, electronic brake controls like ABS and stability control, and related systems such as wheel bearings. Check ase.com for the current task list.

How long should I study for A5?

It depends on your experience. Many working techs do well with a few weeks of focused study and at least one full practice test.

Is there an A5 practice test in Spanish?

Yes. DosTech Prep's A5 course has lessons and practice tests in English and Spanish, side by side. It is test prep only and not affiliated with ASE.
